Hieroglyfics Recs

This is a rec with a caveat, not because of the story but because of me: it’s a post-CotW F/V, which makes me oddly uncomfortable. I’m not sure why I can happily accept the unraveling of the CotW resolution for Ray/Ray, but not for F/V. It’s just me, I guess. So I liked the story in a lot of ways, but am still left with a little niggling waah at the end. Anyway, the plot made me happy, especially the way it was resolved, in which you really see how Vegas has changed Ray - and how it hasn’t. I really liked the characterization of Fraser. And Kowalski shows up at the end, which does a lot to make me feel better about things.

AU. Fraser leaves with Victoria, and makes one last phone call to Ray. It’s just a little scene, just a sliver of the story, but it’s so rich in what it shows and what it doesn’t. The Vecchio voice is fantastic.

Posted as F/K/V, but it’s really F/K plus F/V plus a tiny bit of Ray/Ray hatesex. Also a little RayV/Stella. This is lovely and angsty, with incredible structure, but man, is it fucked up. At the end my heart just aches for poor Ray Vecchio - well, really, for all of them. (And for Stella, too!)

Could be considered either Fraser/Vecchio or gen, depending on how you read it. Victoria shows up in Vegas, and the Bookman responds. What a fabulous angsty gem of a story this is.

Fraser/RayK/RayV in all combinations. Vignettes that show the progression of the relationships into a threesome. Great use of repetition, and some fresh imagery and phrasing. And hot like burning.

What happens after Starman, when Fraser and Ray have to share a room - and a bed. This is the setup for innumerable PWPs, and so it is here, but the adorable characterizations and impeccable dialogue (especially her Ray voice! Woo!) lift it out of PWP territory.

A quiet and gentle story, showing Ray and Fraser’s characters and their relationship through slow revelation. I really like the somewhat distant Fraser POV; there’s a sense of evaluation, of measured observation that seems perfectly consonant with the characterization. I’m not fond of the title, nor of the device of kissing someone to shut him up, but hey, the rest of the story’s so very beautiful, I shan’t complain too much.

Fraser/RayK, Fraser/RayV, implied Ray/Ray, implied…things I don’t even want to mention. :-) NC17, short story. The warning at the beginning tells you it’s going to be semikinky!sex threesome fic with tentacles, but it starts out as a deceptively normal story in which shortly after Fraser discovers that Ray and Ray are having a relationship, each of them separately approaches him for inexplicably motivated, incredibly hot sex. I really like the POV, which is a somewhat distantly-observed Fraser, not so much in his head but rather commenting with wry detachment. There’s all sorts of great detail, from the cases they’re on to the amazing sex they’re having. And then the story takes an abrupt turn for the total crack as the punchline to the shaggy-dog story sneaks up on Fraser - and on the reader. Hee!

Kind of an unrequited Ray/Fraser vibe going on here, a little sweet, a little sad. I like the way the clips of the Riv are used to anchor the beginning and end (and there’s a lovely section in the middle that she called ‘car porn’ when I commented on it!) and the use of successive clips with Ray and Fraser in the same relative positions, which underlines the way they’re always together.

Benny’s got a thing for Ray’s neck; Ray figures it out, and provokes him. The dialogue is snappy and funny and really seems true to the characters. I think I’ve got a thing for Vecchio’s conversation.

Fraser/RayK/RayV-ish. [It’s more F/K and F/V, not really F/K/V. But the only way I can see it as gen is if I ignore the sequence of clips from Vault and MotB.]

Their summary: Fraser has two Rays…and boy, does he drive them nuts. Okay, I like the music, so that’s a start. But oh, man, this is so funny and well done. The clip choices are brilliant, particularly the mirroring of similar actions from both Ray seasons (the eyeglasses! the opening doors! the HANDING UP OUT OF UNDERGROUND YAY!). I thought the ‘pound note’ went a little obvious, but oh, the ‘don’t smoke’ with the gun KILLED ME. And only the briefest hint of Ms. Fraser with the ‘makeup’ line - nice avoidance of the obvious there. And the Fraser thumbs up mirrored by RayV, and the Fraser licking mirrored by RayK! I think this is my new favorite vid, ever. If you are in DS fandom don’t miss it.

Fraser/RayV/Amanda, NC17, novel. Crossover with Highlander: The Series. A plotty adventure with lots of sex! The first sequel, The Catch, by Kellie, is Fraser/RayK/Amanda and novelette length; there are more sequels, comprising “The Fishing Series,” but the rest are all solely due South.

Fraser/Dale Cooper, Fraser/RayV. Crossover with Twin Peaks. An FBI agent who comes to work with Ray on a case turns out to know Fraser from the past. Although the story takes place during a case, it’s really a lovely angsty romance.
